Sport and free time
Picturesque scenery combined with a pleasant local atmosphere makes Poděbrady an excellent place for active and passive sport. Whether you are going on a spa stay or want to get to know the wonderful countryside of the Poděbrady area, you have countless sporting opportunities. With a view to its location in the Labe lowlands, Poděbrady and its surrounding areas are well suited for cycling. Two cycle paths cross right in the town, the first of which leads to Nymburk (cycle path no. 0019) and the other connects the town of Libice nad Cidlinou and Byšičky (cycle path no. 0024). It is especially the path leading along the Labe to Nymburk which is a paradise for in-line skaters. The pleasant environment of the path which is 8 km long is suitable for this sport in both directions. The ten-point nature trail will certainly help to galvanise hikers into action, this leading through floodplain forests and ending by the confluence of the Labe and the Cidlina not far from Poděbrady.
You can satisfy your sporting addiction directly in Poděbrady on the eighteen-hole golf course, tennis and squash courts or in the local skate park, which will especially be appreciated by the younger generation of visitors. There are also two football pitches in the town and a winter stadium, where apart from training sessions by local clubs, you can from time to time even see interesting district or regional matches.
If you are looking for something unusual, you can visit the local riding schools and riding clubs, which although being above all focused on show-jumping, also offer the possibility of horse riding or taking a trip in a horse-drawn carriage. If you catch the horse riding bug, you can also arrange individual lessons in the riding school or other trips into the countryside.
The neighbouring lake, apart from being used as the local Lake Poděbrady natural swimming baths, is frequently sought out by anglers, who apart from the local lakes also use the flowing Labe. Although this is not especially suitable for individual water sports, you can join in the local water traffic on board a steam or motor boat and allow yourself to be carried over the waves by professionals.
